Abstract

Moral problems among adolescents show that religious knowledge does not automatically shape religious character. Studies on Islamic Religious Education (PAI) and religious character have mostly been conducted in Islamic schools or primary schools, while little is known about how PAI shapes religious character in religiously diverse public senior high schools. This study aims to describe the implementation of PAI in shaping students' religious character at SMA Negeri 7 Malang, its impact, and the factors that support and hinder it. It employed a qualitative case study design using observation, interviews with the vice principal, PAI teachers, and students, and documentation, with interactive analysis and source triangulation. PAI is implemented through four strategies: daily, monthly, and annual habituation; advice; remedial mentoring in Qur'anic reading and prayer; and religious activities. Students reported a deeper understanding of worship, more careful behaviour, gratitude, and tolerance. School policy, including character monitoring through the Education Report Card, teacher support, and the mosque as a learning laboratory supported implementation, whereas low self-awareness, weak collaboration among teachers, and limited parental supervision hindered it. Religious character formation should therefore become a whole-school responsibility.
