Abstract

School closures during the COVID-19 pandemic forced schools to shift abruptly to online learning, yet rural schools with limited resources often relied on the simplest tools available. Studies on online learning in Indonesia have mostly described its obstacles, while few have related students' engagement in online learning to their learning outcomes in Islamic Religious Education (PAI). This study aims to describe the implementation of online PAI learning at SMP Hasyim Asyari Ngawonggo, Malang, and to examine its effect on students' learning outcomes. It employed a descriptive quantitative approach involving all 94 students, using a Likert-scale questionnaire, documentation, and interviews, analysed with simple linear regression. Online learning was conducted through WhatsApp groups using scanned worksheets, constrained by shared mobile phones, declining interest, limited teacher digital skills, and low family income. Online learning had a significant effect on PAI learning outcomes, explaining 32% of their variance. The findings indicate that online learning in rural schools functioned as emergency remote teaching, and that learning outcomes depended heavily on device access, parental support, and assessment integrity.
