Abstract

Islamic Religious Education (PAI) in many schools remains teacher-centred, leaving students passive and disengaged. Meta-analyses have shown that Problem Based Learning (PBL) improves critical and creative thinking, yet they reveal little about how PAI teachers in public senior high schools enact PBL and how its effects are experienced in the classroom. This study aims to describe the implementation of PBL in PAI learning and how eleventh-grade students at SMAN 1 Singosari, Malang, experience it. It employed a qualitative case study design using observation, interviews with the principal, the PAI teacher, and students, and documentation, with interactive analysis and triangulation. PBL was implemented in five phases: orientation to a contextual problem preceded by independent reading, organisation into groups, group investigation, presentation of solutions, and teacher-guided analysis and reflection. Students appeared more engaged, more critical, more communicative, and better able to relate the material to daily life, supported by student motivation, school facilities, and the principal's policy. The study suggests that PBL helps students connect Islamic values with real-life problems, positioning PAI as contextual religious reasoning rather than mere transmission of knowledge.
