Abstract

University students live through a transitional period in which religious commitment may weaken amid academic pressure and campus activities. Studies on religious character formation in pesantren have mostly focused on children and adolescents, while little is known about how it is fostered among female university students who live in a student pesantren while studying elsewhere. This study aims to describe the religious character values fostered among female santri at Pesantren Mahasiswa Al-Hikam Malang, the stages and methods of fostering them, and the supporting and inhibiting factors. It employed a qualitative case study design using observation, interviews, and documentation, with interactive analysis and triangulation. Four values are fostered: love of the Qur'an, generosity, empathy, and discipline in worship. Fostering proceeds through three stages, namely knowledge, understanding and direct practice, and consistency, using role modelling, habituation, and advice. Pesantren policy, ustadz and ustadzah support, and the santri organisation (OSPAM) support the process, whereas low self-awareness, weak coordination among OSPAM officers, and competing campus activities hinder it. The study highlights peer-led organisation as a distinctive agent of character formation in student pesantren.
