Abstract

The quality of future teachers depends not only on students' interest in the teaching profession but also on whether that interest is translated into sustained learning effort. Studies in Indonesia have measured the effect of teaching interest on readiness to teach, yet little is known about how the interest of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) students shapes their everyday learning behaviour. This study aims to describe the representation of interest in becoming a teacher among PAI students at STAI Ma'had Aly Al-Hikam Malang and its implications for their learning motivation. It employed a qualitative case study with semi-structured interviews, interactive analysis, and source triangulation. Most students showed a strong interest in teaching, high attraction to the profession, and a positive view of teachers' service, driven by personal interest and family expectations. This interest was reflected in task commitment and class attendance, but not in preparing and studying course material, and assignments were mostly completed close to deadlines. Interest in teaching thus sustains behavioural compliance but has not yet produced cognitive persistence, suggesting that lecturers should make the link between coursework and future teaching practice explicit.
