Rising adolescent mental health problems require schools to prioritize psychological well-being alongside academic achievement. Islamic boarding schools offer a distinctive religious-educational context, yet their dual influence on student mental health remains underexplored. This hermeneutic phenomenological study examined the lived experiences of 12 students aged 15–18 from two Islamic boarding schools in Malang, using semi-structured interviews and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Findings indicate that communal religious practices enhance emotional regulation and resilience, whereas rigid discipline, intensive dual demands, limited autonomy, and stigma increase psychological vulnerability and inhibit help-seeking. The study’s key novelty is the Dynamic Religious Systemic Support Model, conceptualizing mental health as a dynamic, dualistic outcome of interactions among spiritual support, institutional culture, social relationships, and personal autonomy. The model underscores the need for integrated counseling, stigma reduction, and balanced academic-religious demands.
